Tough times have a way of revealing who the best in the business are. So right now—while the energy business has been particularly challenging—is a great time to announce our first Midstream Business Excellence Awards. There’s truth to the old “a rising tide lifts all boats” saying. The awards will recognize the boats that have kept rising even as the tide temporarily has gone out.
Our sister upstream publication, Oil & Gas Investor, has sponsored a popular annual awards program for a number of years that honors the best in the exploration and production sector. I’m confident our midstream awards will prove equally popular.
The awards have three categories:
Executive Of The Year—The premier award that will recognize the most impactful, innovative and inspirational midstream executive for 2015. We’re seeking the executive whose leadership has created significant growth even in this challenging year. He or she should have notched positive change for either the organization the winner leads, or for the midstream at large.
Deal Of The Year—There have been some big M&A moves this year. Which was the best? We’re looking for innovative structures or excellent execution. Size—and scope—relative to the players’ profiles certainly will rank as important in consideration. Above all, how has a deal created growth for investors? This award could include operators as well as financial sponsors.
Project Of The Year—A number of criteria will be considered in this category. Execution and management will be top considerations. Nominations must be for significant, strategic infrastructure. That could include gathering, processing (including LNG projects), transportation or storage ventures. A submitted entry should have met a critical need or created a significant opportunity. It should have overcome key technological, regulatory or landowner/community relations issues. It should have had a significant financial impact on a firm, creating growth and immediate—or long term—rewards for investors.

We’re now well into the final quarter of the year, and there’s still opportunity for midstream players to recover some of what has been lost on Wall Street in the past 10 months. The midstream-heavy Alerian Index has certainly been challenged even if the midstream sector has done relatively better than the upstream. And downstream? How long can those great crack spreads last?

Dec. 8, the Energy Exports Executive Conference will review the potential for U.S. sales abroad of oil, NGL, petroleum products and gas. This could be a huge new business that will have great impact on midstream players in future years. On Dec. 10, the Downstream Executive Conference will review what lies ahead for refining and petrochemical players.
