Statoil ASA (STO) said that on Aug. 21, the Polarled gas pipeline crossed 66 degrees and 33 minutes north of the equator, becoming the first pipeline to take the Norwegian gas infrastructure across the Arctic Circle. This will open a new gas highway from the Norwegian Sea to Europe.
The 482-kilometer long and 36-inch wide pipeline will run from Nyhamna in western Norway to the Aasta Hansteen Field in the Norwegian Sea. The pipeline is being transported by the Solitaire from Allseas. It is the world’s largest pipelaying vessel.
Solitaire is scheduled to arrive at Aasta Hansteen in September.
Pipe with this diameter has never before been laid this deep. Polarled will also be the deepest pipeline on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
Alfred Øijord, the project manager, said that delivery is expected to be well below budget, which was originally 11.1 billion Norwegian kroner.
