Plains All American Pipeline LP said May 19 that an unknown amount of crude oil leaked from its 24-inch pipeline in Santa Barbara County, Calif. Initial reports said the released oil reached a culvert leading to the Pacific Ocean, impacting the ocean and shoreline. The pipeline takes oil from Las Flores, Calif., to Gaviota, Calif.
Plains shut down the flow of oil and began its emergency response plan. The culvert has been blocked so no additional oil reaches the water, the company said. Plains is working with local officials and first responders to clean up the site.
Plains said it “deeply regrets this release has occurred and is making every effort to limit its environmental impact. Our focus remains on ensuring the safety of all involved. No injuries have been reported at this time.”
The Houston-based midstream company will provide updates as they become available. Updates will be available on www.plainsupdate.com and 866-753-3619 is an available claims and information number.
