Sempra Infrastructure received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 expansion project, the subsidiary of Sempra announced Sept. 21.
Phase 2 includes the addition of two liquefaction trains, trains 3 and 4, which will be capable of producing up to 13 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. The second phase will also include an additional LNG storage tank and marine berth.
Phase 1 of Port Arthur LNG is under construction, with a planned capacity of approximately 13 mtpa. Phase 2 will bring the facility’s total liquefaction capacity to 26 mtpa, according to Sempra Infrastructure’s announcement.
"Today's FERC order is a significant step in our ability to advance the global energy transition, creating an opportunity to double the amount of secure and reliable U.S. natural gas that Port Arthur LNG can help deliver to global markets,” Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, said in a press release.
Sempra Infrastructure is also looking to develop a number of projects that would serve the Port Arthur LNG facility, including the Port Arthur Pipeline Texas Connector project, the Port Arthur Pipeline Louisiana Connector project and the development of new gas storage facilities.
Sempra Infrastructure also recently acquired 38,000 acres of pore space and relevant surface rights near the Port Arthur LNG facility in support of its proposed Titan Carbon Sequestration project, which would sequester carbon from Port Arthur LNG operations.
"The value proposition of the proposed Port Arthur Energy Hub goes beyond monetary investment in the region," said Bird. "The proposed projects by Sempra Infrastructure would create new, high-paying jobs, increase innovative business in the region and continue to bolster the reputation of the State of Texas as a global energy leader."
