Environmental surveillance technology provider Qube Technologies will partner with Birch Resources to deploy continuous emissions monitoring technology at the operator's Permian Basin horizontal well facilities, a company press release announced on Oct. 11.
Birch saw a 90% reduction in operational emissions after successfully completing a pilot run of Qube's continuous monitoring technology, Axon, over a three-month period.
"After evaluating multiple technologies and seeing firsthand the impact that accurate continuous monitoring can have on our operations, we are more than happy to choose Qube as our preferred provider,” Birch vice president of surface operations Nick Goodman commented in the release.
The Axon calibrated sensors continually scan for methane and other harmful gases and use artificial intelligence to analyze the location, quantity and type of leaks detected.
"Birch expects all of our sites to be safe, efficient and leak-free. We want operations that our families can visit without concerns for their health and safety," Goodman continued. "Qube’s continuous monitoring solution helps provide that peace of mind.”
The news follows Qube's announcement on Aug. 30 of its continuous emissions monitoring partnership with Canadian operator ARC Resources to provide technology to the company's operations in northern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia.
"Birch is doing the right things to make production run as efficiently as possible, and they are doing it in a clean and responsible manner," Qube senior vice president of U.S. operations Caitlan Capps said in the release. “Birch is another shining example of U.S. energy operators who are making a real difference towards our global emissions reduction goals."
