Regulation authorities in European countries including the Netherlands and UK are working to issue standards for safe design, siting, construction and operation of LNG filling stations. To complete the necessary risk assessment for regulation, DNV GL will initiate a joint industry project in collaboration with exploration and production companies and LNG market stakeholders to simulate failure scenarios at small-scale LNG bunkering and filling stations.

The scenarios will be conducted at DNV GL’s Spadeadam test center in Cumbria, UK. Data gathered from the tests will be studied to gain an understanding of LNG behavior, including discharge, vaporization, dispersion and flammable effects, after a system failure. The experimental program will also include tests needed to quantify certain major hazards.
